Haircare Magic

Haircare Magic

I’m a bit obsessed with hair, it’s everything in life.  So much that I almost pursued this career path over fashion.  What stopped me?  Well, I did enroll into cosmetology school in my last year of college (like a crazy person), and found out I had to complete tons of hours in the same year as having to graduate.  Long story short, my professional hair journey ended before it even started, but my love for hair continues to thrive…

Hair care can be such a drag, especially when we have busy schedules.  We want it to shine, feel healthy, and look flawless, but between the styling, washing, and the ever-changing weather, it can be time-consuming to figure out how to maintain a full head of lusciousness 24/7. One very important step that often gets overlooked is the pre-shower hair care.

The Important Step to Hair Care

Taking a few minutes to prep your hair before stepping into the shower- can make a world of a difference!  Maintaining the foundation of your hair helps strengthen your strands against loss and breakage.  Your hair is naturally more fragile when it’s wet, so any tangles, knots or damage present before washing, are likely to worsen as you shampoo and rinse. By gently detangling your hair before it gets wet, you can prevent a lot of the breakage and hair loss that happens in the shower.

The Simple, Quick, and Effective Routine

Step 1: Apply a Detangler

I love the UNITE Hair 7SECONDS Detangler Leave-In Conditioner.  It’s incredibly lightweight, so no need to worry about it leaving a heavy residue.  Plus, it’s packed with proteins and moisturizing agents that hydrate and protect your hair, keeping it strong and resilient.  This helps minimize breakage from root to tip.  The bonus is that it smells so good, that I will actually use it to freshen up my hair if I don’t have time to wash it.

To use, simply spritz the detangler all over your dry hair, focusing on areas that tend to tangle, like the ends and underside of your hair. Let it sit for a few seconds so it can really start working its magic.

Step 2: Gently Detangle with the Right Tool

Once the detangler sets in, grab the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Detangler Brush. This detangling brush is a total game-changer!  It’s specifically designed to glide through your hair with minimal pulling or tugging. Its flexible teeth gently loosen knots and because it’s so gentle, I don’t have to worry about causing any damage while detangling.

Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots, taking your time. If you hit a snag, stop and carefully work through it- do not rush!  This gentle approach keeps your hair intact, which reduces the amount of hair you lose during your wash.

After the detangling process, I use a boar brush to brush out my hair, so that the detangler is evenly dispersed throughout my hair, conditioning all of the strands.

The Benefits

Why does this routine work so well for preventing hair loss? It all comes down to minimizing stress on your hair. Here’s how it helps:

  • Less Breakage: Detangling before you get your hair wet means fewer breakage and split ends.
  • Reduced Pulling: A gentle brush like the Tangle Teezer Brush means less pulling at your roots, which helps keep your hair firmly anchored to your scalp.
  • Hydration & Protection: The UNITE 7SECONDS Detangler hydrates and strengthens your hair, making it more resilient and less prone to breakage.
  • Preventing Matting: Knots and tangles can turn into a tangled mess once wet. By taking care of them beforehand, you prevent that dreaded matting in the shower.

How Often Should You Do This?

The thought of losing more strands than necessary stresses me the hell out, so I am extremely dedicated to doing the pre-shower routine before every hair wash.  I also detangle at times on days I don't wash my hair, just to keep it maintained.  If you have thicker or curlier hair, I think pre-shower detangling is a must, it'll be a lifesaver for minimizing tangles and matting.  If you have fine hair like mine, a gentle detangle before washing will keep it stronger and healthier in the long run.

Let me know if this routine helps you!
